Charalambos Theopemptou awarded 2026 Democracy Award for lifelong environmental activism
Former Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation leader Charalambos Theopemptou received the 2026 Democracy Award from the Centre for Socio-Political Thought “Politeia” during a ceremony held on September 15 in Nicosia. The award recognizes his longstanding dedication to environmental activism, shaped by formative experiences during his youth and student years.
In his acceptance speech, Theopemptou shared memories of his childhood in Pentadaktylos before the Turkish invasion, describing the pristine natural environment that inspired his ecological awareness. He also recounted his time studying in London, working in a clothing factory to support himself, and being influenced by a lecturer active in the Women’s Liberation Movement, which helped ignite his passion for activism.
Former MP Alexandra Attalidou highlighted Theopemptou's multifaceted character, emphasizing his ability to engage with political issues while remaining actively involved on the ground in environmental protection. His journey reflects a blend of personal perseverance and a deep commitment to preserving nature both in Cyprus and abroad.
