21 Semi-State Board Appointments Made Against Advisory Council Recommendations Raise Concerns
Cyprus MPs pressed the government regarding 21 appointments to semi-state organisation boards made without following the advisory council's recommendations. Of 94 positions recently filled, 73 aligned with the council’s advice, while 21 did not. MPs questioned whether government-appointed rules were respected and called for greater transparency since no public justification was provided for the departures.
The advisory council chairman emphasized unanimous evaluations based on candidate integrity and qualifications but acknowledged some recommendations were fewer than expected, and the cabinet retained final appointment authority. Deputy Minister Irene Piki confirmed the council’s non-binding advisory role and announced that the IMF will offer technical support to improve public entity governance.
The recent appointments have also stirred tensions within the governing coalition, with Diko securing the majority of preferred nominees and significant influence in the energy sector. Other coalition partners expressed dissatisfaction with their board representation, highlighting political friction following the cabinet’s decisions affecting major organisations such as EAC, Cyta, CyBC, and universities.
