Investigation into Cyprus 'black van' surveillance case remains open despite recent closure announcement
The Cyprus Independent Authority Against Corruption, led by Transparency Commissioner Haris Poyiadjis, has stated that the 'black van' surveillance case should not be considered closed. Although the Authority announced the end of its investigation after a July 29 meeting with the Law Office, Poyiadjis clarified that they are still examining related actions and challenges remain.
Attorney General Giorgos Savvides had asserted that the investigation was complete, referencing Article 10 of the Authority's governing law and noting that the case had already been taken to court in 2021. However, the Authority disputes this interpretation, emphasizing that their mandate includes looking into matters not previously covered, such as possible conflicts involving Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelides.
The 'black van' case revolves around a vehicle equipped with mobile phone interception technology linked to Israeli businessmen Avraham Shahak Avni and Tal Dilian, figures also connected to a spyware scandal in Greece.
