Disy party dispute erupts as leaders accuse each other of disloyalty over Christodoulides support
Tensions within Cyprus' Disy party have escalated between deputy chairman Efthimios Diplaros and vice-chairman Yiannis Karousos, who exchanged accusations of disloyalty over a gathering supporting President Nikos Christodoulides. Karousos criticized Diplaros for attending a meeting at a Platres property with Christodoulides and other political figures, suggesting conflicting loyalties.
Diplaros denied any wrongdoing, highlighting that attendees included supporters of multiple party leaders and accusing Karousos of betrayal and defamation. The conflict intensified with mutual threats and Karousos urging Christodoulides supporters within Disy to openly declare their positions or leave the party, citing statutory rules against members accepting government posts while in opposition.
The dispute follows the cabinet appointment of former Disy MP Nikos Tornaritis as Christodoulides’ special envoy, a move Karousos lamented. Party leader Annita Demetriou intends to convene a leadership meeting to address the rift, while former party chief Averof Neophytou reaffirmed support for Christodoulides if a strategic agreement is made regarding the Cyprus issue.
