Investigative Journalist Makarios Drousiotis and Kyriaki Kyriakou Face Criminal Charges in ‘Sandy’ Case
The long-running 'Sandy' case saw investigative journalist Makarios Drousiotis and Kyriaki Kyriakou appear in Nicosia District Court for its referral to the Criminal Court, set for December 15. Both defendants were ordered to post bail of 10,000 euros. Drousiotis faces 73 charges including publishing false news, circulating forged documents, and harassment, accused of knowingly distributing fake messages involving senior judicial and executive figures. Kyriakou, known as 'Sandy,' is charged with drafting forged messages and harassment.
Drousiotis’s defense team contested that the case should be heard summarily by the District Court, but the judge complied with the Attorney General's request to proceed in the Criminal Court, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations. The Attorney General also denied the defense's request for potentially exculpatory evidence from the Independent Authority Against Corruption's investigation linked to Drousiotis's book 'Mafia State.'
Speaking after the hearing, Drousiotis described the process as vindictive and tied to his anti-corruption work, asserting confidence in the judicial process while condemning the referral as punitive. The case revolves around allegations of fabricated messages implicating public officials, which authorities have declared false, a point contested by Drousiotis.
