Larnaca CID investigates legality of plasmapheresis machines at medical centre

Larnaca CID has launched an investigation following the discovery of plasmapheresis machines at a medical centre in the district. The inquiry began after a letter from the Health Services Department raised concerns about the machines' operation potentially breaching the law. Investigators are working closely with the Health Services Department and are taking statements as part of their efforts.

This probe follows an earlier investigation into the same medical centre triggered by a 2023 Health Ministry letter, after a patient experienced serious complications reportedly linked to a plasmapheresis procedure. Although that inquiry was forwarded to the Law Office, there was not enough evidence to establish a criminal offence.

The current investigation is occurring amid increased public scrutiny of plasmapheresis procedures in Cyprus and Greece, heightened by the recent death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis following a similar treatment in Athens.
