Cyprus Health Insurance Organisation approves 72% of patient requests for treatment abroad

Since October 2025, Cyprus’s Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) has approved 889 of 1,234 requests to send patients abroad for treatment, achieving a 72% approval rate. Life-threatening cases are decided within an average of 42 minutes, with patients typically departing within a day once approved. Urgent cases receive decisions within one day on average, and normal cases within six days.

The HIO processes requests electronically, with doctors initially categorizing cases by severity. However, HIO experts review and can reclassify cases to ensure accurate prioritization. Some requests are rejected if the treatment is available in Cyprus or if applications are incomplete.

Since taking over the programme from the Health Ministry, the HIO has aimed to provide equal treatment to all patients and streamlined decision-making procedures. To date, 657 patients have travelled or are still undergoing treatment abroad, with provisions for extensions and additional services handled through ongoing expert assessments.
