Echoes of Cyprus documentary premieres at Nicosia Municipal Theatre on September 28
Danae Stylianou’s documentary "Echoes of Cyprus" will premiere on Monday, September 28, at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre. The film is based on extensive research by ethnomusicologist Nicoletta Demetriou, focusing on a unique sound archive recorded in Cyprus 73 years ago. In 1953, researchers captured over eight hours of traditional Cypriot songs, oral poetry, and musical performances, preserving a vital record of the island's cultural heritage.
The documentary pairs these original recordings with diary entries and audiovisual materials to explore the links between past and present Cypriot musical traditions. By featuring contemporary actors and musicians alongside the archival material, the film creates a dialogue that highlights the living legacy of Cyprus's cultural memory.
The screening will be held at 7 p.m., with English subtitles provided. Entry is free but requires prior reservation through more.com or at the theatre's box office. The event is presented by the Press and Information Office as part of the 2026 Nicosia International Festival.
