Nicosia Municipality Identifies 60% of Mosquito Complaints Originating from Reported or Nearby Breeding Sites
The Municipality of Nicosia has revealed that approximately 60% of mosquito complaints from residents are traced back to breeding sites either at the home reporting or neighboring locations. To combat this, daily mosquito-control efforts are ongoing, including weekends, focusing on known hotspots along river channels, storm-water drains, and residential areas. Approved treatments target these areas to reduce mosquito breeding.
Intensive control work is concentrated in the Engomi area and along the Klimos river corridor, with additional inspections and treatments conducted on storm drains and grates. The Municipality emphasizes the importance of residents' cooperation, urging households to regularly check and eliminate any standing water in buckets, plant saucers, abandoned swimming pools, and construction sites where water can accumulate.
The Municipality also investigates each complaint thoroughly, often inspecting surrounding properties to identify more breeding sites. While mosquito control is a matter of public health and quality of life, officials stress that effective results require collective community action to remove stagnant water sources and prevent mosquito proliferation.
