Cyprus Ministry warns of vandalism and safety risks on school buses affecting student transport services
Cyprus’s Transport, Communications and Works Ministry has reported recent isolated incidents of vandalism and disruptive behaviour on school buses, raising serious safety concerns for passengers. Incidents include throwing objects, harassing drivers, moving while the bus is in motion, smoking, and damaging equipment, which endanger all students onboard and may result in temporary route suspensions.
The Ministry emphasized that these safety breaches can force buses to be taken off the road for inspections and repairs, with immediate replacements not always possible due to limited resources. It appealed to parents and guardians to encourage responsible behaviour, asking them to remind children to remain seated, respect drivers and fellow passengers, and report any incidents compromising safety.
While recognizing that most students behave appropriately, the Ministry stressed its commitment to identifying those responsible and restoring affected routes swiftly. Working alongside the Education Ministry and schools, it is intensifying safety inspections of vehicles and enforcing regulations to guarantee secure student transport, prioritizing the wellbeing of all passengers despite any inconvenience caused by service disruptions.
