Turkey Warns US Cyprus Arms Sale Extension May Harm Island Stability
Turkey's Defence Ministry has expressed concerns over the United States' decision to extend by a year the lifting of restrictions on defence equipment sales to Cyprus, now set to last until September 30, 2027. The ministry warned this move could negatively impact the sensitive balances and trust climate on the island, urging third parties to adopt a fair and impartial approach that respects the Turkish Cypriot community.
Additionally, Turkey reiterated its stance on Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s recent visit to Kastellorizo, emphasizing the island's demilitarised status under the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty and criticizing the presence of military assets during the visit as disruptive to peace and stability. Turkey also clarified that the relocation of its 51st Commando Brigade to Söke was approved months before the visit.
The Defence Ministry further commented on the Mecca Defence Alliance involving Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, stating it is a cooperative defence agreement not aimed against any country. It also condemned recent Houthi drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, highlighting the threat to regional security and international maritime trade routes in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
