BirdLife Cyprus and CABS excluded from parliamentary debate on bird trapping amid political tensions
BirdLife Cyprus and the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) have been excluded from a parliamentary Environment Committee debate scheduled for Wednesday, which focuses on activist organisations and hunters' rights related to wildlife protection. The two groups, known for their active role in exposing illegal bird trapping, accuse the far-right ELAM party of political manoeuvring aimed at weakening anti-poaching efforts.
CABS highlighted that their coordinated operations with police and the Game and Fauna Service led to 55 poacher convictions and the release of over 1,200 protected birds last autumn alone. BirdLife Cyprus expressed concerns that excluding the only two civil society bodies actively monitoring and reporting illegal trapping raises serious questions about the session's intentions.
The Cyprus Hunting and Wildlife Conservation Federation (KOK & DAZ) responded by condemning illegal hunting, emphasizing that enforcement responsibility lies solely with state authorities. They also warned about tensions and safety risks caused by harassment or intimidation in the countryside, calling for respect for lawful hunting activities.
