Cyprus and Lebanon initiate feasibility study for subsea electricity interconnection with World Bank support
Cyprus and Lebanon will hold their first technical meeting to discuss a feasibility study for a proposed subsea electricity interconnection, with participation from the World Bank. The initiative aims to explore selling electricity from Cyprus to Lebanon and strengthen regional energy connectivity. Lebanese Energy and Water Minister Joe Saddi confirmed that the two countries agreed to finance this study following discussions during Lebanese President Joseph Aoun's visit to Cyprus.
The study, fully funded by the World Bank and conducted in two phases, will initially assess electricity supply, demand, and economic viability. If results are favorable, a detailed technical and economic evaluation will follow. Both governments describe this cooperation as a significant milestone to enhance energy security and promote sustainable development in the eastern Mediterranean.
Additionally, Cyprus pledged €25 million towards the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), contingent on the resumption of survey work, as revealed by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. The interconnection could also eventually link Lebanon to the European electricity grid via the planned Cyprus-Greece connection.
