Cyprus and UK advance implementation of 2023 maritime cooperation agreement
Cyprus and the United Kingdom have agreed on concrete steps to implement their maritime cooperation agreement signed in February 2023. The agreement covers a range of areas including maritime safety, decarbonisation, seafarers’ welfare, and cyber security. Discussions between Cyprus Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis and UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary Keir Mather in London focused on deepening bilateral cooperation and addressing challenges in global shipping.
The cooperation framework under the Memorandum of Understanding includes expert exchanges, technical workshops, training programmes, and private-sector involvement. Priorities identified for immediate action include seafarers’ safety and welfare, as well as the green transition in maritime operations. The collaboration also extends to combatting piracy, fraudulent ship registrations, and coordinating within international bodies like the International Maritime Organization.
During her visit, Hadjimanolis additionally met with industry leaders, including Foresight Group chairman Ravi K. Mehrotra, to explore opportunities for enhancing maritime activities. The discussions aimed to foster innovation and stronger partnerships in shipping and marine infrastructure development, supporting long-term growth and sustainability in the sector.
