Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nicodemos Damianou emphasized that artificial intelligence should be seen as an opportunity rather than a threat, during a lecture at the University of Cyprus. He warned that the greatest risks stem from human misuse or poor decisions on AI deployment, rather than from AI itself. Damianou rejected fears of AI domination and technological singularity, stressing that AI's impact depends on human choices and governance.
Damianou highlighted recent global AI developments including OpenAI's mathematical breakthrough, UN warnings about AI risks, and significant corporate moves like NVIDIA's $13 billion acquisition of Hugging Face. He noted AI's evolution into a geopolitical and economic issue, urging Europe to maintain technological autonomy by not relying solely on regulations shaped by US-China dialogues.
Cyprus’ National AI Strategy to 2032 aims to position the country as a trusted AI hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, focusing on compliance, speed of AI deployment, and strategic sectoral development. Damianou underscored that AI should empower people, preserving human oversight especially in critical areas like healthcare and finance. He concluded by urging students to retain critical thinking amidst AI advances, warning against letting machines replace human judgment.
