Cypriot MEPs urge EU to take stronger defensive stance against Turkey following von der Leyen’s speech
Two Cypriot members of the European Parliament have demanded more robust EU defensive measures against Turkey after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s State of the European Union address. Loucas Fourlas of Disy welcomed von der Leyen’s declaration to defend every inch of European territory but criticized her for omitting Cyprus in her remarks. He pressed for clarity on whether Turkish aggression against Cyprus or Greece would trigger Article 42.7, the EU's mutual defence clause.
Geadis Geadi of Elam praised the proposal to create an EU equivalent of NATO’s Article 4, which calls for consultations when a member’s security is threatened. However, he pointed out ongoing provocations by Turkish drones and jets near Cypriot airports, accusing Turkey of jeopardizing civilian lives and criticizing the EU’s current stance as hypocritical.
Von der Leyen announced plans for a new European security strategy to address modern threats and gaps in current defence doctrine, aiming to complement NATO with a European mechanism for crisis response. This strategy would enable rapid coordination among EU states during security incidents, improving collective deterrence and response capabilities.
