Conflict of interest allegation made against prosecution lawyer in central prisons documents trial
During Wednesday's hearing at the Nicosia permanent criminal court, defence lawyers in the central prisons documents trial accused prosecution lawyer Vasilis Bissas of a conflict of interest. Christos Triantafyllides, representing former prisons director Anna Aristotelous, claimed Bissas maintained close ties with the husband of one of the defendants. Bissas denied any ethical breach, stating that the legal service was aware of the relationship and permitted his involvement in the case. The court ruled that it lacked jurisdiction over the disciplinary matter since no violation was found.
In the same hearing, prosecutor Theodora Papakyriakou addressed the issue of classified material withheld from the defence. She presented a clearer copy of a previously blank document, identified as a map of the central prisons. The defence raised objections concerning the authenticity of the document, which the court dismissed as unfounded, reserving final judgment on the evidence for the trial scheduled to resume on September 22.
Eight individuals, including former director Aristotelous and former deputy director Athena Dimitriou, face charges related to conspiracy and the theft of over 48,000 documents from the central prisons.
