Cyprus Building Permits Surge 21% in May 2026 Driven by Residential Growth
Cyprus saw a significant rise in building activity in May 2026, with 735 building permits authorised, marking a 21.1% increase compared to May 2025. These permits, valued at €428.2 million, covered 352,126 square meters and enabled the construction of 1,847 dwelling units. Residential permits alone accounted for 530 of these, up 31.3% year-on-year for the month.
From January to May 2026, the total number of building permits reached 3,650, a 32.1% increase from 2,764 in the same period last year. The value of these permits rose by nearly 44% to €2.10 billion, with the authorised floor area expanding by 43.1% to 1.70 million square meters. Residential building projects saw the strongest growth, with dwelling units planned rising 63.7% to 8,978 units.
Non-residential permits grew modestly by 7.1%, while civil engineering permits increased by 26% during the five-month period. Notably, residential apartment block homes surged by 90.6%, making up the bulk of approved units. Meanwhile, road construction and plot division permits also experienced significant gains, highlighting a broad upswing in Cyprus’s construction sector.
