Larnaca criminal organisation trial adjourned after indictment changes, three defendants released on bail
The Larnaca permanent criminal court has adjourned the case involving four defendants accused of criminal organisation activities to November 23, following significant changes to the indictment by prosecutors. Three defendants—a 42-year-old man and two men aged 29—were released on bail after the court accepted defence objections to their detention. Only a 22-year-old special forces police officer remains in custody, also facing an attempted murder charge against a prominent businessman.
The 42-year-old faces charges including money laundering and participating in a criminal organisation, while the 29-year-olds are additionally charged with aiding and abetting money laundering. Earlier, a 32-year-old defendant was acquitted due to insufficient testimony. The arrests were part of a January 22 police operation in Larnaca and at the central prisons, during which authorities confiscated cash, jewellery, firearms, bulletproof vests, and other items.
This investigation by Larnaca CID is connected to broader organised criminal activities in the district, including previous cases involving a protection racket, torture, abduction, and a shooting near police headquarters. The court will resume hearings in late November to continue examining the charges against the defendants.
