Defence challenges prosecution witness in Habakkuk Monastery trial with photos and videos

Defence lawyers for the two monks on trial in the Habakkuk Monastery case challenged the testimony of prosecution witness Father V. during Wednesday's court session. They presented photos and videos from monastery life aimed at contradicting Father V.’s claims of oppression and unequal treatment. The defence highlighted apparent inconsistencies in the witness’s account, including disputed receipts and identity documents, while the witness maintained his statements.

The two defendants, Archimandrites Nektarios and Porphyrios, face multiple financial misconduct charges, including embezzlement and conspiracy to defraud the monastery. Nektarios also faces allegations related to possession of suspected stolen funds and tax evasion. The case involves up to 71 witnesses and was adjourned to resume on September 23 and 28.

The defence also addressed a fainting episode involving the witness, attributed by Father V. to exhaustion and carbon dioxide inhalation. Videos shown in court depicted normal monastery activities, while the witness insisted these did not negate his claims of unequal treatment. Both defendants were granted bail under strict conditions, including passport surrender and regular police reporting.
